OMBUDSMAN WATCHERS RESOURCE CENTRE

During the 2005 BMG survey they used the very old technique of association. Most people will have either played this game or been involved in a training session during which it was used. A common variation is to pick a fruit or vegetable that you feel best describes yourself/someone else. As examples, One person could describe themselves as a strawberry because they feel they are a big softy another as a banana because they are thick skinned. Anyway you get the idea if you have never experienced this technique before.

BMG decided to use cars/mode of transport rather than fruit and vegetables. During their sessions they asked LGO staff what car best describes the service. The answers below provide an interesting insight as well as a little light relief.

Our thoughts

Answers from LGO senior staff. ‘An elegant old car. Elegance associated with high quality, reliability, very high standards and strong professionalism. But perhaps a little out of date.’ ‘There is a lot under the bonnet that is unused’. We would not describe the LGO as an elegant old car, see our suggestion on the right. However, we agree they are out of date and there's a lot under their bonnet that's unused, their brains!

Answers from LGO junior staff. ‘A stopping train, it can take a long time as there are quite a few stops and starts along the way and it can take longer than you expect. Our customers might pick the same.’

The LGO junior staff don't know their customers very well if they believe customers think they are like a stopping train. More like a derailed train.
Answers from LGO junior staff. ‘I think my perception is of a fairly reliable car, something like a Saab. I would go along with the stops and starts. It is not too modern either.’ We suggest that A Trabant, one that has had all the bits of value striped off so all that is left is a worthless rotting carcase, would better describe the LGO.

Answers from LGO junior staff. ‘I would like to turn the Saab thing over a little as I think we are perceived to be a little too white middle class and our customers aren’t so maybe we need something with a bit more street cred.’

Something with a bit more street cred, what? A pimped Trabant?

'The LGO remind us of a dodgem car, because whenever we submit a complaint the LGO always tries to dodgem.’
‘The LGO remind us of a school bus, because the local authority run them as well.’
'The LGO remind us of a fairground ride, they just make you sick and you end up back where you started.’

Can you do better?
